The name "kawanawidan" is derived from the word "tawid," which in English means "tradition, legacy, and heritage." Founded in 2008, it highlights regional products, encourages people to learn about and appreciate local culture, traditions, and customs, and grows the tourism industry. In addition, this event commemorated the separation of Provincia Ilocos into Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur and eventually created Abra and La Union.
