“Jose Rizal, the face of the Philippines”

Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda, commonly known as Jose Rizal, is the Philippines' national hero. He was a Filipino nationalist, polymath, and writer who contributed significantly to the country's liberation from Spanish colonisation. Jose Rizal was born on June 19, 1861, in Calamba, Laguna, Philippines. He acquired his schooling in the Philippines and then continued his studies in Europe.

One of Rizal's greatest contributions was his writings, which fought for political reform and social improvement in the Philippines, particularly in "Noli Me Tangere" (Touch Me Not) and "El Filibusterismo" (The Reign of Greed), which revealed the Spanish colonial government's abuses and injustices. These pieces raised the national consciousness and inspired Filipinos to feel a sense of belonging and pride.

In addition, Rizal co-founded La Liga Filipina, an organisation dedicated to uniting Filipinos and promoting their welfare. Rizal's efforts to organise peaceful resistance formations demonstrated his dedication to achieving social change through unity and cooperation.

Rizal also had a long-lasting influence on Philippine society, as he thought that education was the best path for growth. Rizal's emphasis on education inspired the formation of schools and institutions dedicated to providing quality education to Filipino children. His impact on the education sector has continued to change the country's educational system, emphasising the need for nationalism and critical thinking.

To summarise, one of Rizal's brave acts for our country was his death for independence and freedom, as well as treating Filipinos equally and providing them with equal rights. Despite the Spaniards' threats, he remained committed to his mission for the people. The anniversary of José Rizal's execution in 1896 at Bagumbayan (now known as Luneta) in Manila is observed on December 30 annually. Filipinos celebrate Rizal Day, a national holiday honouring José Rizal's life and contributions. On this day, we honour his valuable sacrifice and unwavering dedication to the Philippine people. Rizal's legacy lives on today, inspiring generations of Filipinos to advocate for justice, peace, and prosperity.
